Abel Brainz Digest, Vol. 76 - Special Memorial Day Weekend Edition
Hello again!
Welcome to a special edition of the Digest. That makes two this month! Will there be one in June? What does it mean? What's the significance? I DON'T KNOW!
Your Favorite Improv Jam
It's happening on Thursday, June 26th. Still at 8pm at St. Paul UMC in Grant Park (the neighborhood, not the actual park) Notes will be given!
Your Favorite Improv Class
New session starts next week! Thursday, June 5th, 8-10pm. There are still four spots open so if you're interested and available to take the class. Click HERE to fill out the information form.
cool reading stuff
Just started James by Percival Everett and I'm digging it. I'm also getting some laughs from America, Let Me In: A Choose Your Immigration Story by Felipe Torres Medina. Still haven't finished Sons of El Rey and I certainly plan to.
cool improv/sliiightly personal stuff
I've been making more of an effort to go to jams and shows and I love the improv community here in Atlanta. It's supportive and fun and there seems to be a lot of positivity. One thing I've noticed though, is the vibe of "trying to get it right," or to be looked upon as "a 'good' improviser." As I watch more and more, I thought of this quote I stumbled on recently:
”The only questions worth asking today are whether humans are going to have any emotions tomorrow, and what the quality of life will be if the answer is no.”
—Lester Bangs (1948-1982)
Pretty fucking heavy. And it ties into improv in that what I see lacking most is people giving a shit about the scene they are in. I don't mean that they're ambivalent. I mean that they literally don't get emotionally invested in anything happening on stage. People are just trying to "get it right" or be clever. Maybe this has a "get off my lawn" vibe. Or maybe there's something to it. Who knows??
