Abel Brainz Digest, Vol. 27 - November 7, 2023

Welcome to Volume 27!

Let's look at some cool stuff!

Some cool reading stuff!

I finished Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. Excellent read, I highly recommend it. From the description on Bookshop.org :

Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant--in the blink of an eye--that actually aren't as simple as they seem.

I mentioned in a past newsletter on how there's a segment on improvisation in the book. It was delightful to read a muggle's description of improv but also how fun it is to really deep dive into what we take in and what triggers our decisions when we're improvising. I think a common pitfall is thinking our ideas have to be completely hashed out versus a simple choice when entering/beginning a scene. Remember: simple does not mean easy.

Some cool music stuff

Kate Bush was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a few days ago and Atlanta's own Big Boi gave the speech. He's a HUGE Kate Bush fan.

I've also been revisiting Mitch Murder. Back in 2011-2012, my late friend Jason introduced me to the music that is perfect for night driving. If you dig the 80's synth kid on tik tok, you're gonna love Mitch Murder.

Cool movie stuff

I rewatched Jurassic Park. Man, still a classic. Even with a blockbuster, Spielberg can tell a story. The build to the non-stop last half hour, the reveal of the dinos, and even film nerd symbolism with the pristine Jurassic Park logo on the jeep door at the beginning, and the muddied logo at the end. Want some more film nerd stuff? Peep this

That about does it.
